World Book Day
At Holy Family we celebrated World Book Day on 8th March. All the pupils and staff dressed up as characters from books. We started the day with a whole school assembly, which parents were invited to. We also had special guests attending - the Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Greenwich, the Chair and Vice Chair of Governors, the Head of English from St. Thomas More Comprehensive, the school nurse, the Community Police Officer and representatives from Berkeley Homes, London Wildlife Trust and Meadows House Care Home. It was lovely to welcome so many members of our local community into our school to share this special event.
On Wednesday of 'Book Week' different age groups got together in school to pair up as reading buddies. They shared stories together, taking it in turns to read. They talked about the pictures and characters and what they liked about the books. Children love sharing stories with younger or older peers.
Reception Class Visit
During 'Book Week' Miss Pons visited Nursery / Reception class to tell the story of PETER PAN. Teachers and Teaching Assistants swap from class to class to read to different children and children love to hear a different story telling voice.
Nursery / Reception children loved dressing up and using props to take on the role of the characters in the Peter Pan story. Miss Pons used her pop up book with sounds to set each scene. She also gave lines for children to say as part of the story.
Nursery / Reception class would like to thank Miss Pons for such a lively, interactive and exciting story telling session.
Parent Story Reading Visit
During 'Book Week' we encourage parents to come in and read a story to the class their child is in. Children love it when their parents come to school to visit. Today Nicholas was thrilled that his Dad came to visit and read to Year 1. It's great when parents share books written in their home language or a traditional tale from their culture. If you would like to come and read at school please contact Miss Monkman and she will arrange a visit.
Our Reading Garden
On Monday 4th March 'Book Week' started at school. Our first celebration was the opening of a new "Reading Garden' a beautiful area dedicated to relaxing reading at lunch time. There are huge comfy cushions and cosy tents. Children have the opportunity to read with children from other year groups and enjoy different books.
